“Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” ~David Ogden Stiers
Are you itching to update your family portrait? That was MY birthday wish this year because so often motherhood has me running around like a chicken without a head that I barely have time to be present for my children. We are talking about having a quiet moment where mommy looks decent (instead of frazzled) with smiling babies – that’s no easy feat! However where there’s a will, there’s a way! And how wonderful our session turned out! I encourage all mommies to try to be in the photo more often with your children because your children will thank you years down the road in helping them preserve their precious childhood memory of you. On the run? A phone selfie is great too – work with what you have! (This light up phone case is great for poorly lit places.) But an investment with a professional photographer for thoughtfully and artistically captured images for your family will be an heirloom that will be forever passed on for generations. Doesn’t that sound divine?

Every professional needs to continuously learn in order to grow, hone their craft and hold themselves accountable to the clients they serve. That is why every year I set aside time to take continuing education classes. I always learn something new and am able to improve on some aspect of my photography or business. The awesome thing about our industry is although our creative vision differs across the board so, all of us photographers can walk out of the class with completely different ways to execute our creative vision in our artwork.
This year, I took a fun workshop with Roxanne Bryant on Color Theory and was very privileged to attend The Baby Summit 2016 at the Marriot Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia. I loved learning from the absolute world’s best – Kelly Brown, Luisa Dunn, Heidi Hope, Sue Bryce, Ana Brandt etc… Amazing women and photographers! I walked out of each class feeling inspired and so blessed that all our gracious instructors took the time to share the expertise they’ve spent years perfecting with us! I was also able to forge relationships with new vendors to bring consistent, high quality props to my clients. Overall, a beautiful and totally worthwhile experience! Most of all, I was able to carry this dazzling energy, burning passion and better photography home to all my clients.
At a time when holiday photoshoot inquiries are on the rise, here are a few questions for clients to ask when searching for a professional custom boutique baby portraiture photographer:
- Does the photographer set aside time to attend continuing education classes, workshops or conferences? This is especially important for safety when posing newborns!
- Does the photographer belong to a reputable professional photography association and are they in good standing?
- Does the photographer pay taxes and are they licensed in their geographic area of business?
- Does the photographer routinely clean their props and maintain good hygiene/health for their baby clients? Are they up to date on their yearly shots?
- Can the photographer provide client testimonials that span at least a year to show credibility?

We initially set out on a journey to photograph a fun cake smash session. But summer called and in the end we decided to do a fun outdoor session. O boy, did Lady K have fun with the lanterns, airy canopy and shabby chic mirror! Mommy and grandma worked hard to help but we had a ton of fun capturing Lady K’s genuine happiness, curiosity and everything Lady K. After all, what is a birthday if not to celebrate yourself? Happy 1st Birthday Lady K!

Lady I might look like a little bundle here but she was a fighter – a fighter of sleep, that is! But once Lady I started dreaming, she let me capture her sweetest moments. Right when the session was about to end, daddy asked if we could get a few last shots with him in uniform. We were running late but I asked to see the uniform and was so in awe at daddy’s marine uniform that I knew we simply had to capture this special image. Because 25 years when Lady I looks back, she is going to want to remember her courageous daddy and beautiful mommy. These are going to be images the whole family will pass on for generations and I am so blessed to be able to do this for Lady I.
In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.

This was a beautiful session to celebrate two birthdays, the Lunar New Year as well as family! Lady C and Sir J were super spunky and fun. I’m so blessed to be able to capture this special moment in time for the W family because as all moms know – they grow up so fast! Thank you for inviting me to capture your beautiful family.
